Seattle-area average salaries outpace the nation – Puget Sound Business Journal

Wages in the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue area rose faster than the national average last year, according to PayScale    Inc., a Seattle-based compensation research firm.According to the PayScale Index released Jan. 12, average wages in the Seattle metro area grew by 1.6 percent during 2011, compared to an average rise of 1 percent in the nation as a whole. Of the 20 largest metro areas in the United States, only four posted a bigger increase in paychecks than the Seattle area.PayScale’s numbers are not adjusted for inflation. Katie Bardaro, the analytics manager for PayScale, said that wages nationally have not been keeping up with inflation since the 2008 recession — although this trend is just beginning to turn around. Recently, wage rises have been matching inflation in the top industries and cities, including Seattle.
